Solid Waste Management Consultancy for 24 municipalities in Lebanon
SES in JV with arcenciel was awarded by UNICEF to conduct an Audit of the current Solid Waste Management System in place at 24 Municipalities in North Lebanon and Bekaa in order to assess the needs in supplies and equipment and recommend measures to increase the capacity and improve solid waste collection and disposal in these municipalities based on an environmental friendly and sustainable approach. The findings of the assessment study were discussed with the concerned local authorities to ensure complete ownership and approval of the recommendations. Moreover, SES’ tasks included the following:
1- Advising UNICEF WASH programme and other partners and stakeholders in stabilization on tools and equipment to be provided to targeted municipalities to improve their capacity in solid wastes collection and disposal
2- Providing a TOT to UNICEF WASH implementing partners on community mobilization and promotion of best solid wastes management practices to support municipalities in solid waste proper collection and disposal.
3- Advising UNICEF and its WASH implementing partners in organizing and implementing community meetings to strengthen the messages of the general public awareness campaigns encouraging and ensuring full participation of the residents of the municipalities.

Solid Waste Management in Akkar Region
SES conducted an audit of the current SWM System for the Municipalities of Fnaydiq (estimated population between 12,000 and 18,000), and Wadi el Jamous (estimated population 5,000). The audit assessed and recommended measures to improve the Solid Waste Management System in these municipalities. SES followed the below mentioned tasks in order to properly conduct the Solid Waste Management Audit:
- Task 1: Assessment Study on the actual SWM situation which included:
a. Assessment of Existing and proposed waste collection system (bins’ capacity, garbage collection truck, etc.);
b. Assessment of the distribution plan for the collection bins;
c. Analysis and improvement of the management system;
d. Analysis of the tailored awareness campaign plan for the three municipalities.
e. Development of detailed specifications and BoQs and tender documents for the supply of needed equipment for the improvement of the SWM system.
- Task 2: Awareness Campaign which included:
a. General workshops
b. Training of trainers Seminars
c. Community meetings

A complete assessment of the Solid Waste Collection System for the “Sabra and Shatila” Palestinian refugee camp in Ghobeiry-Beirut
On May 2008, SES submitted the full study of the Solid Waste Management system in the Palestinian refugee camp and Farhat neighborhood. The assessment report is structured in 3 main sections:
- Section 1: Description of the project location, the existing conditions in “Sabra and Shatila” area, its current infrastructure, the adopted solid waste collection system, the characteristics of the solid waste generated in the area, the present awareness levels of the inhabitants, and the underlying management structure in the study area.
- Section 2: Analysis of the gathered information including the identified problems in solid waste management and recommendations for improvement, and a presentation of the proposed solid waste collection plan for “Sabra and Shatila” area. - Section 3: Proposition for further recommendations and future measures for the improvement of living conditions in the study area.
